Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Mixing bowls

Ingredients

  • 10 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, sliced thin, and halved
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • cup all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅓ cups quick cooking oats
  • 1 ⅓ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ cup melted unsalted butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Mix sliced apples with brown sugar, flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla until evenly coated.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly into the baking dish without pressing it down tightly.
  • Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder in a separate bowl.
  • Pour in melted butter and stir just until the mixture looks moistened and crumbly.
  • Scatter the topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes, until the topping turns golden and the filling bubbles at the edges.
  • Let the apple crisp rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving so the filling thickens.

Notes

Use cold cubed butter for a crunchier topping. Toss apples with lemon juice if preparing ahead. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
